Armadillo – A DNS Server in Gleam for Homelab Use
TL;DR
Many home networks lack a simple way to manage local domain name resolution. Armadillo is a self-hosted DNS server built in Gleam that resolves local domains automatically for all devices on the network.
✦ Why It Matters
Engineers can implement Armadillo to enhance local DNS management in their home networks.
Key Takeaways
- Set up Armadillo on your router for local DNS management.
- Utilize caching to improve DNS query response times.
- Configure upstream resolvers for unmatched queries.
- Explore Gleam for building efficient network tools.
Full Summary
Home networks often struggle with DNS management, especially for local domain names. Armadillo addresses this by providing a self-hosted DNS server written in Gleam, a programming language designed for performance and safety.
Users can configure Armadillo on their routers, allowing all devices on the network to resolve local domains seamlessly. When a DNS query is received, Armadillo first checks its local record store for a match; if none is found, it forwards the query to a specified upstream DNS resolver.
The server caches responses based on Time-To-Live (TTL) settings, enhancing response times for repeated queries. This setup not only simplifies local domain management but also offers greater control over DNS settings.
Engineers can leverage Armadillo to create a more efficient and customizable DNS solution for their homelabs.
