Storied Colors – a catalogue of named colors
TL;DR
Artists and historians often lack detailed information about the origins and characteristics of pigments. A comprehensive catalogue of named colors, including Cobalt Blue, was created to document their provenance, chemistry, and historical significance.
✦ Why It Matters
Engineers and researchers can utilize this catalogue to understand the historical context and safety of pigments in their projects.
Key Takeaways
- Explore the catalogue for detailed pigment histories.
- Utilize search features for specific color information.
- Stay updated with weekly new entries and corrections.
- Consider historical implications when selecting pigments.
Full Summary
Historically, many pigments have rich stories tied to their origins, usage, and even controversies, such as toxicity. A new online catalogue was developed to document 252 named colors, including their chemical composition, historical context, and the artists who used them.
Users can search for pigments by name, year, origin, hex code, or chemistry. Each entry includes a detailed provenance, ensuring that no unflattering aspects are omitted.
New entries are added weekly, and existing ones are updated as new research emerges. This initiative not only preserves the history of colors but also educates users about the implications of using certain pigments.
The catalogue serves as a valuable resource for artists, historians, and researchers interested in the intersection of art and science.
