Beyond DMS: Accelerating Migrations SQL Server Logins and Users to Cloud SQL
TL;DR
Google Cloud's Database Migration Service (DMS) successfully migrates databases to Cloud SQL for SQL Server, but does not transfer SQL Server logins, which can hinder application connectivity post-migration.
✦ Why It Matters
Ensure your SQL Server logins are migrated to avoid application connectivity issues after database migration.
Key Takeaways
- Utilize sp_help_revlogin to migrate SQL Server logins securely.
- Create helper procedures in your source SQL Server instance.
- Execute the generated script in Cloud SQL to avoid orphaned users.
- Consider integrating with Customer-Managed Active Directory for modern authentication.
How It Works
The sp_help_revlogin script generates T-SQL statements that recreate SQL Server logins with their original encrypted passwords and SIDs, ensuring proper mapping.
