Stop the GUARD Act and age verification laws worldwide — Free Software Foundation — Working together for free software
TL;DR
Age verification laws, like the GUARD Act, threaten software freedom by imposing restrictions that compromise user privacy and control. The Free Software Foundation advocates for free software as a solution to resist these encroachments.
✦ Why It Matters
Engineers should advocate against age verification laws to protect user freedoms in software development.
Key Takeaways
- Understand the implications of age verification laws on software development.
- Advocate for user privacy and freedom in technology.
- Engage with local lawmakers about digital rights issues.
- Support initiatives that promote free software and ethical technology.
Full Summary
The GUARD Act proposes mandatory age verification for users of chatbot services in the U.S., ostensibly to protect minors. However, this legislation could lead to a surveillance regime that undermines user freedom and complicates software development, particularly for free software projects often maintained by individual contributors.
Age verification technologies are seen as incompatible with the principles of software freedom, as they may require Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) to function effectively. The Free Software Foundation (FSF) warns that such laws could criminalize the development of free machine learning tools and restrict anonymous usage of software.
The implications extend beyond chatbots, threatening the foundational right for anyone to use any program for any purpose. Activists are mobilizing against this and similar legislation, emphasizing the need for meaningful communication with lawmakers to protect digital rights.
