Show HN: Submarius – Global water clarity for divers
TL;DR
Divers and fishermen often struggle with knowing the best conditions for their activities due to unclear water visibility. Submarius is a mobile app that provides real-time water clarity forecasts and bite scores using satellite data and local environmental factors.
✦ Why It Matters
Engineers can leverage environmental data modeling to create user-centric applications in outdoor activities.
Key Takeaways
- Explore integrating satellite data for real-time applications.
- Consider user safety features as essential, not optional.
- Utilize environmental factors for predictive modeling.
- Focus on user experience with clear, actionable metrics.
Full Summary
Water clarity is crucial for divers and fishermen, as poor visibility can hinder their activities. Submarius is a mobile-first application that predicts underwater visibility using a model that incorporates satellite Kd490 turbidity measurements, river discharge plumes, and wave mixing.
It provides a bite score from 0 to 10, which combines various factors like tide, moon phases, solunar tables, and barometric trends to indicate the best times for fishing. The app also includes safety features such as shark tag alerts, GPS sharing, and SOS functionality, all available for free without a paywall.
By offering a straightforward visibility forecast, Submarius helps users avoid guesswork and optimize their time on the water. The app's unique approach to combining environmental data with user-friendly metrics can significantly enhance the experience for water enthusiasts.
