AnkiDroid: Google Play no longer allowing Open Collective donation link
TL;DR
AnkiDroid faces removal from Google Play due to the rejection of its Open Collective donation link, impacting its funding model. Without resolution, the app will be unavailable globally from September 11, 2026.
✦ Why It Matters
Share this issue with your network to help AnkiDroid find support from Google.
Key Takeaways
- Understand Google Play's payment policies regarding donations.
- Verify the tax-exempt status of your organization before linking donations.
- Consider alternative funding models if facing compliance issues.
- Engage with community support to amplify your concerns to Google.
How It Works
AnkiDroid collects donations through Open Source Collective, which acts as a fiscal host. This organization is classified under 501(c)(6), a status that Google does not recognize for donation purposes, leading to compliance issues.
