"The original URL for this prediction will no longer be available in 11 years." (2011)
TL;DR
Tim Berners-Lee's principle that 'Cool URIs don't change' faces challenges as web documents often become inaccessible over time. Despite this, advancements in web technology allow for stable URL systems that can endure for years.
✦ Why It Matters
Implement 301 redirects on your web projects to ensure long-term accessibility of your URLs.
Key Takeaways
- Evaluate your current URLs for long-term accessibility.
- Implement 301 redirects for important web pages.
- Monitor the status of critical URLs regularly.
- Consider using archival services for essential content.
How It Works
The bet relies on the use of 301 redirects, which permanently redirect users from one URL to another. This mechanism allows webmasters to maintain access to content even if the original URL changes, thus combating link rot.
