Why Emacs Consult async searches feel slow and how to speed them up
TL;DR
Consult, an Emacs package for asynchronous searches, intentionally delays updates to search results to improve performance. This design choice contrasts with the immediate updates seen in similar tools like Counsel.
✦ Why It Matters
Adjust debounce and throttle settings in Consult to enhance your search experience in Emacs today.
Key Takeaways
- Adjust consult-async-input-debounce for faster search initiation.
- Set consult-async-refresh-delay for quicker UI updates.
- Consider system performance when changing settings.
- Balance responsiveness with CPU usage to optimize performance.
How It Works
Consult uses debounce and throttle settings to manage when searches are initiated and how often results are displayed. Debouncing prevents unnecessary searches during typing, while throttling limits the frequency of new search processes.
