Why does Opus 5 feel worse to work with?
TL;DR
Opus 5, while technically superior to its predecessors, is perceived as less user-friendly due to its tendency to make assumptions and require more oversight. Users prefer models that clarify ambiguities rather than guess intentions.
✦ Why It Matters
Consider adjusting your AI model selection criteria to prioritize user interaction and clarification capabilities.
Key Takeaways
- Evaluate AI models based on user experience, not just performance metrics.
- Encourage models that seek clarification in ambiguous situations.
- Be aware of the limitations of benchmark tests in real-world applications.
- Prioritize AI tools that enhance collaboration and understanding.
Full Summary
Opus 5 is a more advanced AI model compared to Opus 4.7, Opus 4.8, and Fable, yet many users find it less pleasant to work with. The dissatisfaction stems from Opus 5's inclination to make bold assumptions without seeking clarification, which contrasts with the more interactive and cautious approaches of earlier models.
This behavior is attributed to two main factors: the push for self-improving AI and the emphasis on performing well in benchmark tests. While benchmarks are designed to be clear and solvable, they often do not reflect the complexities of real-world tasks, where ambiguity is common.
Users express a strong preference for AI that asks questions and seeks guidance, as real-life scenarios rarely have a single correct answer. The implications suggest a need for AI development to prioritize user interaction and clarification over mere performance metrics.
