Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
TL;DR
Google has removed all Manifest V2 extensions from the Chrome Web Store, including the popular content blocker uBlock Origin. This marks the completion of a long transition away from the older extension framework.
✦ Why It Matters
Evaluate your current extensions and consider alternatives that comply with Manifest V3.
Key Takeaways
- Check if your current extensions are affected by the MV2 removal.
- Explore Brave browser for continued access to MV2 extensions.
- Stay informed about the implications of transitioning to Manifest V3.
- Evaluate alternative content blockers compatible with Manifest V3.
How It Works
Manifest V3 introduces a new extension architecture that aims to limit the capabilities of extensions, enhancing security and privacy. This includes restrictions on background processes and a shift towards using service workers instead of persistent background pages.
